Connecticut

Connecticut land surveyors are regulated by the State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, housed within the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). The license title is Land Surveyor (LS), and candidates must pass the NCEES FS exam, the NCEES PS exam, and a Connecticut 2-Hour State Exam. Connecticut offers multiple classification pathways based on education and experience combinations, and notably does not require continuing education for license renewal.

Step-by-step to PLS.

A linear view of the typical path — from education to license. Some steps overlap in practice.

  1. 01

    Determine Your Classification Path

Connecticut uses a classification system with multiple pathways. Class 5: 4-year surveying degree + 3 years experience (50% in land boundary surveying, divided approximately equally between office and field). Class 6B: 4-year civil engineering degree + 4 years experience, or 2-year surveying degree + 5 years experience. Class 6A (non-graduate): 9 years total experience with minimums for supervisory, chief, and instrument roles. Class 7: 16 years total experience with at least 10 years in land surveying (no degree required). Board approval is required before taking exams.

  2. 02

Pass the FS Exam (Part 1)

    Available now

The NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying exam is computer-based, offered year-round at Pearson VUE testing centers. 110 questions, 6 hours. Connecticut requires board approval before you can register with NCEES. Passing the FS qualifies you as a Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) once your education requirements are verified.

  3. 03

    Gain Qualifying Experience

Accumulate the experience required by your classification. All experience is limited to a maximum of one year claimed per calendar year, and part-time work is capped at 50%. The board interprets 'land surveying' experience as land boundary surveying specifically — construction surveying, engineering surveying, and geodetic surveying alone do not count. Experience must be documented with the name and license number of each supervising LS.

  4. 04

Pass the PS Exam (Part 2)

    Available now

The NCEES Principles and Practice of Surveying exam is computer-based, offered year-round at Pearson VUE testing centers. You must have board approval and meet the experience requirements for your classification before sitting for the PS exam. Five references are required, at least four of whom must be members of the profession.

  5. 05

Pass the Connecticut 2-Hour State Exam

    Prep coming soon

Connecticut administers a 2-hour state-specific exam covering Connecticut surveying laws, standards, and practices. This exam is offered only in April and October. Applications for the April exam must be received by March 1. This exam is also required for reciprocity (Class 8) applicants.

  6. 06

    Receive Your License

Once all exams are passed and your application is approved, the board will issue your Land Surveyor license. The application fee is $80 (non-refundable). All applications are submitted online through the DCP eLicensing portal.
