Minnesota
Minnesota land surveyors are regulated by the Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). The license title is Professional Land Surveyor (PLS). Candidates must pass the NCEES FS exam, the NCEES PS exam, and the Minnesota Land Surveyor (MNLS) exam. Minnesota requires a 4-year surveying curriculum or a BS with surveying coursework, plus progressive qualifying experience under a licensed PLS.

Step-by-step to PLS.
A linear view of the typical path — from education to license. Some steps overlap in practice.
- 01
Meet Education Requirements
Minnesota offers two main education pathways for the FS exam: (1) Graduation from (or within 32 semester credits of) a 4-year land surveying curriculum from an accredited institution; (2) Graduation from (or within 32 semester credits of) any BS program, with completion of at least 11 semester credits (16 quarter credits) from board-approved surveying categories. Qualifying experience under a licensed PLS may be gained before or after completing education requirements.

Pass the FS Exam and Obtain LSIT
Available nowThe NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying exam is computer-based, offered year-round at Pearson VUE testing centers. 110 questions, 6 hours. Board application fee: $25. Upon passing and meeting education requirements, you receive a Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certificate.

Graduates of a 4-year LS curriculum need 3 years; other pathways require additional experience. Experience must be in areas of land surveying practice defined by the board rules (Minn. R. 1800.3505).
- 04
Pass the PS Exam
